Start by choosing a font or style for your letters - and then transfer the letters onto your fabric. The beginning of the letter is your point A. Push the needle up through the fabric at this point. Next, insert the needle a short distance away from point A to create your first stitch. The end of the stitch is point B.

The Difference Between the Outline and Stem Stitch
1. As you can see in the photo above, I have drawn a spiral on to my fabric. I don't normally draw this on my own stitching, but I find this spiral visual to be helpful here in showing you the direction that the stitches will go.

The Difference Between the Outline and Stem Stitch
On the lower left quarter of the sampler there is a small space that needs to be filled which you can see hereโฆ. Draw 3 vertical lines as in the photo and split stitch them to complete. Take a stitch on the line. Come up in the middle of that stitch - solitting the thread. Continue doing this - split stitching each of the lines to complete.

You can see that the stem stitch makes a rope-like line. How heavy the rope is depends upon the thread you use. Stem stitch can be very delicate, and can be used on the most delicate embroidery pieces. Or it can be bold! Stem stitch also takes curves really well - so vines, curly-q's, little circles and so forth are a breeze with stem stitch.
